5 Forgotten Horror Games that Will Haunt You for Years… [5 Freaky Faves]

It’s no secret how much I love horror games. I’ve been playing them for about twenty years now! With all this time that has passed, I decided to use my YouTube channel as a spring board for me to revisit some of my first horror games that left with me some… feelings… at the end. Revisiting them at a later point in my life gave me a new perspective which I had anticipated. What I didn’t anticipate was how often these games would haunt me, especially at night. Let’s talk about five horror games that are still haunting me after all these years.

Rule of Rose

Rule of Rose was my very first finished Let’s Play on YouTube, and I picked quite a doozy! Rule of Rose carries some controversy with it and was even almost banned before it was released in certain countries. I was able to play it a little many, many years ago. After a few instances of running across the game in the wild (at exuberant prices), I knew I needed to revisit it and finally finish it. An emulator helped me do this, and I was able to film the whole thing for YouTube! It felt amazing to finally finish putting together the pieces of this confusing and deeply intertwined puzzle and scratch this Rule of Rose itch I had had for many years. You can check out this rare gem by clicking on the link to my full playlist above and experience the twisted story of Rule of Rose for yourself.

Clock Tower 3

Clock Tower 3 was one of the first survival horror games I played and enjoyed on my own. I usually played with a friend, and found most horror games to be thrilling versus scary while in the company of another; however, Clock Tower 3 was definitely scary while I was playing alone. So what exactly makes Clock Tower 3 stand out among the others on this list? To put it simply: the serial killer enemies! Enemies that we must hide from and evade through out different sections of the game is a common theme through some of these older horror games (like Haunting Ground mentioned below) but Clock Tower 3 put a nice spin on this game mechanic with its enemies that you will have to experience yourself to believe.

Haunting Ground

This list wouldn’t make sense without mentioning Haunting Ground. It’s a beloved cult favorite among many horror gamers and almost as rare to find in the wild as Rule of Rose. While I had played Haunting Ground in the past and made it decently far into the game, I never got to finish it… until this year. With the help of an emulator, I was able to finally finish the game. The feeling of completing it was the serotonin I needed after the past couple of years we’ve had. If you want to experience the fear and horrors of Haunting Ground, you can check out my full playlist above. Be warned that there are many disturbing and triggering scenes; Haunting Ground is not for everyone.

Fatal Frame 3

Fatal Frame III: the Tormented isn’t my most favorite out of the Fatal Frame game series; however, Fatal Frame 3 is the one I think about the most. Being trapped in a haunted mansion sounds pretty tropey, but Fatal Frame 3 is your typical horror game. With its unique game mechanics like the camera obscura and Japanese lore that is as frightening as it is disturbing, Fatal Frame 3 brings a something unexpected to the table that adds to it’s haunting atmosphere… After dreaming of being lost inside an old mansion, you are able to perform tasks around your home that furthers the story, but what you don’t expect is for your nightmares to follow you to the real world and make themselves known in spine-shivering ways.

Obscure

Another 2000s horror game on this list (and for good reason) is Obscure. Obscure is different from many of the horror games I have played because of the co-op opportunities is provides. Whether you play alone or with a friend, two characters can team up against the atrocities assaulting their high school to find their friend and uncover the secrets that lie beneath the school’s frightening hallways. This game is as full of monsters as it is teenage angst. I’m taking a trip down this horror high school memory lane on my YouTube channel right now!
