10 Royal Romance Webtoons with Bad Ass Women Leads

I’m quite a bit late in celebrating International Women’s Day, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate women on other days! I’ve had this list on my mind for awhile now, and this month felt like the perfect time to finally write it and post it! At first, I was just going to do Historical Romance Heroines, but the more I dug into the Webtoons I subscribe to, the more I began to realize how much fantasy bleeds over into this genre. Rather than try to pick and choose what is more fantasy than historical, I added both which gave me 10 Webtoons to recommend with some super bad ass women leads in royal romances!

Suitor Armor

Lady-in-waiting, Lucia believes getting through the royal wedding will be the toughest part of her new life. That is until she finds herself falling head over heels with Modeus, an up-and-coming knight to the king’s guard. With her newfound interest, she is quickly awakened to the mysteries of the kingdom when she learns Modeus is in fact an enchanted suit of armor without a soul. Could there be more to him than just shining armor? — WEBTOON

Suitor Armor is back with season 2 so you are just in time to dive into several episodes! There’s so much going on in this Webtoon; everyone has secrets. Lucia is about to have to face the hardest thing she has yet: special powers as well as being royalty herself! It was hard enough being a fairy among those who hate and hunt her kind. Now Lucia has to deal with this new information all while trying to hold onto her relationship with Modeus which has been a point of criticism in the castle, even from her best friend, the queen-to-be.

SubZero

What would you sacrifice to save your family? How far would you go to protect your people? For Clove, the last princess of a near-extinct Dragon clan, the answer is the unthinkable: MARRY your greatest sworn enemy in an effort to bring peace to your land. — WEBTOON

First of all, this one of the the steamier comics on Webtoons, and I highly, highly recommend it if that’s your kind of thing. There’s not any NSFW panels, but if you wanted to sink your teeth into something juicier, the creator has a Patreon where she posts sexier works of our favorite main characters. Clove is our leading lady and on top of marrying her greatest enemy, she must work around not being able to harness her own powers. SO GOOD!

The Remarried Empress

Navier Ellie Trovi was an empress perfect in every way — intelligent, courageous, and socially adept. She was kind to her subjects and devoted to her husband. Navier was perfectly content to live the rest of her days as the wise empress of the Eastern Empire. That is, until her husband brought home a mistress and demanded a divorce. “I accept this divorce… And I request an approval of my remarriage.” In a shocking twist, Navier remarries another emperor and retains her title and childhood dream as empress. But just how did everything unfold? — WEBTOON

There are several Webtoons that I enjoy enough to fast pass regularly, and The Remarried Empress is one of those Webtoons. There is so much drama packed into this beautiful comic. Navier is absolutely incredible. Not only is she full of grace and poise despite her husband bringing home a concubine, but she’s so good at being an empress that even a well-disguised insult from her is so subtle, that most don’t even realize what she’s done. We stan Navier around here.

Leveling Up My Husband to The Max

A cold, uncaring husband, and unreasonable mother-in-law, and a wrongful death — could your life get any worse? What if you were given a chance to change things? When Amber is sent ten years back in time at the moment of her execution, she finds herself face to face with the younger version of her husband, but something’s different about him… He’s completely at her beck and call! Will she be able to prevent the past from repeating itself, or will her life spiral into misery once again? Operation: Leveling Up My Husband to the Max begins now! — WEBTOON

Leveling Up My Husband to the Max is one of the newer Webtoons on this list, but our leading lady Amber is already proving to be a complete bad ass as she uses her knowledge of future events to make herself, her kingdom, and her husband stronger. The scene with her mother-in-law are some of the best displays of her badassery. I can’t wait to see more as this Webtoon continues.

Men of the Harem

Scorned by her lover and thrown into power after the mysterious assassination of her father, Latil must marry to secure her sovereignty of Tarium. Instead of choosing one man to become her Royal Consort, she chooses five young men from all walks of life to join her Harem. Will Latil ever solve her father’s murder, and can she keep the peace in her Harem? — WEBTOON

Latil is another Queen who takes what she wants with such grace that there’s no way you can refuse her. After her lover takes a wife, Latil gets the best kind of revenge on him while also crushing the stereotype that only men in power can have royal consorts/concubines. She takes five gorgeous and powerful men into her harem; each are fighting for her sole attention, but Latil is busy being Queen and solving her father’s murder. Will she ever choose one? I sincerely hope not because watching the men try to get her attention and steal her affections from others is both steamy and hilarious. There are some darker themes in this one though so beware!

My Gently Raised Beast

Blondina is living a real-life Cinderella story. After growing up poor and enduring a difficult childhood, she discovers that she is a princess of the Ates empire. However, her estranged father and half-siblings give her the cold shoulder when she moves into the palace, and Blondina must keep a low profile. That all changes when she befriends Amon, a cat-like creature with mysterious intentions. For years, creatures like Amon and humans have struggled to live in harmony. Can Blondina and Amon’s friendship bring peace, or will it deepen the rift between their people? — WEBTOON

I mentioned My Gently Raised Beast awhile back in my 2022 Top 5 Romance Webtoons post. It is the newest subscription to my Webtoon rotation, and I binged all the free episodes in about a day. I am hooked! If you love gorgeous characters, a bad boy that’s sweet on the heroine, and a leading lady that is deceptively intelligent and takes no shit, you HAVE to read this one! I love a bit of Tsundere love interest, and this one hits the spot just right. Lot of tension building (SFW and a little spicy so far like SubZero) and mutual crushing that is so adorable.

Wished You Were Dead

King Karloi of Croisen finds himself at odds with his position in life. His wife’s father, Duke Deluah, is angling for the throne, and as an outsider to the family, Karloi fears for his position. His frustrations have affected his marriage, though he finds himself questioning his cold approach to his wife, Evonne. He may no longer recognize her, but Evonne saved his life long ago, and was his first love. This is but one of many secrets Evonne bears the weight of, having fallen victim to a curse that prevents her from telling any secrets… — WEBTOON

There aren’t a whole lot of episodes in Wished You Were Dead compared to some of the other Webtoons on this list, but let me promise you that the latest episodes are really showing how awesome Queen Evonne is. Her father, Duke Deluah, is out to get Karloi’s throne so Evonne must find ways to outsmart him without letting on that she’s gone against his plans. That’s gotta be particularly hard since she’s been cursed to never tell any secrets, including how she actually knows Karloi before becoming his Queen. I just want to slap Karloi until he realizes that Evonne is the girl who saved his life many years ago. He treats her terribly just because of who her father is. This man got a fake concubine just to stir up drama, and even the fake concubine can see how much Evonne cares about his jackass self. (I secretly hope she kicks his ass once she breaks this curse, and he realizes who she is.)

His Majesty’s Proposal

A broken engagement and one too many drinks are the catalysts for a mistake that will change Penelope Zecalion’s life forever, as she finds herself waking up in bed with the emperor! Grouchy, foul-mouthed Penelope is reluctant to let the emperor into her heart after her first engagement went so wrong. Can the emperor change her mind and win her heart?. — WEBTOON

This one is getting really good so now is the best time to catch up on His Majesty’s Proposal. Penelope is one of those girls who takes no prisoners. While she is a woman in high standing, she remembers her past life which has made her a bit jaded and rouch around the edges. The Emperor has wiggled his way into her heart, and they balance each other well. I can’t wait to see her kick some more butt as Empress! She’s already shown the other ladies of the castle that she is not to be messed with. It’s only going to get better from here.

The Wrath & the Dawn

Khalid, the Caliph, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. However, Shahrzad has a clever plan – not only to stay alive – but to end the murderous King’s reign of terror once and for all. (A reimagining of 1001 Nights based on the YA novel by Renee Ahdieh.) — WEBTOON

Everything is coming to a head in The Wrath & the Dawn so now is the time to add this one to your subscriptions and catch up! Magic, revenge, tragedy, and romance are all rolled into this incredible story. At the center of it all is the most bad ass lead on this list: Shahrzad. She is extremely intelligent and courageous even as she stares who she believes to be Death in the face after he kills her beloved best friend. I don’t want to give too much away as I think this one is close to wrapping up so jump on this one before you are forced to read only one episode a day after its completion!

The First Night With the Duke

A handsome, selfish noble falls for a beautiful, kind commoner — at least, that’s how the story’s supposed to go. When an average college student wakes up as Ripley, an extra in her favorite romance novel, she resolves to enjoy the luxuries of her character’s status while watching the novel’s plot unfold from the sidelines. However, her plans are soon derailed when she finds herself in bed with no other than Duke Zeronis, the novel’s hero! Dodging the villainess’ schemes, the Duke’s advances, and her own feelings, can Ripley keep the story on track and survive beyond the first night? — WEBTOON

I didn’t know what to think about this isekai-inspired Webtoon when I first started reading it, but it quickly became one of my favorites because of Ripley. She’s the life of the party, smarter than she looks, and is steadfast in her wants and beliefs. It’s no wonder the Duke wants her for himself. Poor Ripley tries to get this romance novel back on track, but putting her growing feelings aside is much harder than she though. And then there’s the whole mystery of how she got thrown into this world in the first place…

Like Wind on a Dry Branch

As plague and turmoil afflicts the empire, enchanting widow Rieta Tristi finds herself at the mercy of a malicious nobleman and his dying wish to have her buried alive beside his corpse. The plague has taken her husband, slave traders have taken her young child, and now her own life is at risk — until an unexpected visit from the empire’s outcast prince changes everything. — WEBTOON

If you love a slow-burn romance, Like Wind on a Dry Branch is a Webtoon you need to check out. Rieta has a tragic backstory, but Killian discovers that Reita is more than her trauma. She is so strong, stronger than she needs to be most of the time. And she has clerical abilities that match in well with his shield maidens that he disguises as his harem of beautiful women. Reita is definitely a character to keep an eye on because I think with Killian’s growing affections and Reita’s growth as a person and as a cleric, she is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
